Repentance -From Darkness to Light -The Gate to Spiritual Rebirth Part 4
In this episode Phil explores the doctrine of repentance, the new birth, and the pathway that leads one into the presence of God. Phil teaches that Jesus Christ’s merits, blood, sacrifice and pleading for the repentant sinner is the only way that justice can be satisfied, allowing mercy and forgiveness to be extended, as Christ pleads our case before the Father (D&C 45:3–5). He explains that Moses diligently taught Israel to behold the face of God and that the Doctrine of Christ, through faith in revealed truth, repentance, covenant obedience, and baptism of water, was calculated to bring God’s people into a covenant relationship with Him and prepare them to enter the rest of the Lord (D&C 84:23).
Phil outlines the difference between repentance and forgiveness, teaching that repentance is the sinner’s deliberate turning toward God in response to divine light and revelation, while forgiveness is God’s merciful response made possible only through the merits, blood, atonement and advocacy of Jesus Christ. He presents the path that leads to Jesus Christ the keeper of the Gate as follows: light, revelation, recognition of sin, faith, repentance, entrance into the covenant through authorized baptism, Christ’s advocacy and divine acceptance, forgiveness and remission of sins, increasing justification and sanctification, the Baptism of Fire and Baptism of the Holy Ghost and the new birth. Commencing in the straight and narrow path one will experience continued sanctification, revelation, divine endowment, entrance into the Lord’s Rest, and ultimately inheritance of eternal life.
Drawing from the ministries of John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter, Paul, Alma, and other prophets, Phil teaches that repentance is a transfer of allegiance and dominion, requiring men and women to turn from sin and yield themselves to Christ (Matthew 3:1–11; Acts 2:37–41; Acts 26:18; Alma 7:14). He emphasizes that the Baptism of Fire and the Holy Ghost is not the end but the beginning, opening the door to greater revelation, holiness, grace, power, and divine manifestations (Moses 6:60–61; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; 2 Nephi 31:19–21).
The episode concludes with the promise that Zion is a place of refuge and inheritance, where the righteous will be gathered as they continue faithfully seeking Christ and pressing forward toward the redemption of Zion and the rest of the Lord (D&C 45:64–71; Ether 13:2–11; Moses 7:60–67).
