266: Truth, Prophecy, Free Agency, & Election
Truth, Prophecy, Free Agency, & Election
In this episode Phil teaches that our eternal identity begins with the truth that intelligences are not created by God but are chosen by Him and organized into spirit bodies, then given opportunities to progress through mortality and act for themselves (D&C 93:29–32). Phil explains that we existed in the beginning with God, even the Spirit of Truth, and that all things are plainly manifest before Him—past, present, and future—yet our agency remains intact because we are free to act toward salvation or condemnation (D&C 93:23–24; D&C 130:7–8; D&C 93:30–31).
Phil teaches that all men and women are enlightened by the Light of Jesus Christ, which proceedeth forth from the presence of God, giving life to all things and power to discern good from evil (D&C 84:44–50; D&C 88:7–16). Those who hearken to the Spirit are wise and will be saved, while disobedience results in spiritual death, bringing judgment upon ourselves unless we repent and access the plan of redemption (D&C 45:56–57; Alma 42:11–16). He outlines that God Himself atoneth for the sins of the world, making possible justification through repentance and covenant (Alma 42:12–15).
Through the foreknowledge of God, prophecy is revealed and Christ was prepared with power from the beginning, pleading the case of the righteous and enabling all to enter the new and everlasting covenant (Jacob 4:13; D&C 38:1–4). Phil explains that as Christ received grace for grace, so we may also receive endowment after endowment and become partakers of His fullness if we remain faithful (D&C 93:19–22).
The message concludes that God reveals outcomes but does not force them—what we truly seek is what we receive, and through Jesus Christ the way of life is open to all who choose to come and partake of His joy (D&C 88:32).
